Prof. S. C. Sharma is an educationist, researcher and an administrator. Before becoming Director, NAAC, he was working as Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Jain University and also Advisor, Jain Group of Institutions. Apart from this he has been appointed as Advisor for Avinashilingam University for Women, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu. Formerly he was the Vice-Chancellor of Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University, Bhilai (Chhattisgarh State Government supported University).
He was member of State Planning Board of Government of Karnataka. He is the former Director of Centre for Manufacturing Research & Technology Utilization (CMRTU), Centre for Social Service & Skills Promotion (SKIP) and Principal of R V College of Engineering, Bangalore. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Tumkur University (Karnataka State Government supported University), Tumkur, the Vice- Chairman, Karnataka State Higher Education Council, Govt. of Karnataka.

He is conferred Honoris Causa Doctor of Literature for Education and Social Service (Mangalore University, 2007), Honoris Causa Doctor of Science (Avinashilingam University for women, 2005), Honoris Causa Doctor of Letters for Education and Social Service (Karnatak University, Dharwad, 2008), Honoris Causa Doctor of Science (Kuvempu University, 2009) and Honoris Causa Doctor of Science (Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Bellary, 2014). He has been awarded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan National Award for Best Engineering College Principal, conferred by ISTE, New Delhi, 2008-09. He has been conferred Honorary Rank of Colonel in the National Cadet Corps by the Directorate General, NCC, New Delhi. Prof. Sharma is the recipient of the prestigious international "THERMEC'2013 Distinguished Award" at Las Vegas, USA.
Prof. S.C. Sharma has successfully completed the research projects with the support of funding agencies like ISRO, DST, CABS, CSIR, ADA, DBT, GTRE, LRDE, UGC, AICTE, etc. He has found engineering solutions to the rural issues by formulating topics which has greatly benefited rural masses and has also identified more than 5000 orphans, juvenile delinquents and speech & hearing impaired and provided them education and material support and uplifted them by giving a tryst to their destiny.
He was engaged in a relentless battle against unemployment in the past by a fusion of the market requirements and the technical skills of the trainees through the Centre for Social Service and Skills Promotion (SKIP) as its founder Director. Through MOU with Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, Arunachala Pradesh, he has trained the tribal community of the NE region of India on Computer education. The centre has been awarded Karnataka Rajyothsava Award-2005 by the GOK.
He established Centre for Sustainable Technology and Clean Energy for the development of green technologies, such as vermicomposting of city garbage, sewage sludge for the benefit of the farming community and trained them on biotechnological applications for effective abatement of pollution hazards due to toxic constituents. The organic humus developed using vermicomposting technology has provided succor to marginal farmers by unfolding indigenous job market. Many farmers below the poverty line have reaped the benefits of these unique programmes.
He has published 285 research papers in international refereed journals and has delivered keynote addresses in various international conferences and guided 37 PhDs. He has presented 70 research articles in national and international conferences. He has visited as a senior scientist in Universities and Research Laboratories of international repute across the globe. He was the UGC nominated member of the Executive Council of Visweswaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum. He served as Visiting Scientist of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and served as Honorary Professor of Eminence of Mangalore University.
He has also served as Honorary Adviser to Sir Dorabji TATA Trust. He was member of the Syndicate of Mangalore University, UGC Nominated Senate Member of Jain Viswa Bharati University, Ladnun, Rajasthan, member of the Advisory Committee, Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, New Delhi, member of the Governing Council of Sir M. Visweswaraiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore.
He is a counselor and an educational columnist in print and electronic media. Lakhs of despondent youth have been transformed by his counseling. He has authored a number of books for the novice and the devout, which have received wide recognition including that of Sahitya Academy Award for his book in Kannada which has enabled even the school dropout youth to comprehend the engineering concepts.
He represented India at the first forum of Global Network of Religions for Children organized by Arigatou Foundation, Tokyo (May 2000) and at the second forum in Geneva (May 2004) and effectively delineated the Action Programme for the education of the underprivileged children of the world which has received special attention by the UN for possible adoption in global Educational policy for children. He has established a techno culture museum 'Kriyakalpa' in R V College of Engineering, Bangalore, which focuses on the technological content in the centuries old practices. The artifacts preserved in the museum have a deep scientific semblance tinged with folk relevance. The museum has received the patronage of the Kannada and Culture Department, GOK and is honored with Janapada Yakshagana Academy Awards – 2000 by the Govt. of Karnataka.
He is a recipient of 'Rajyothsava Award', of Karnataka State, UGC Career Award, UGC National Fellowship, Kempegowda Award of Bangalore City Corporation, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and Babu Jagajeevanram Awards of Govt. of Karnataka, Mother Teresa Award of the Centre for Socio-Economic Development, Bangalore, 'Karnataka Kalashree' Award, "Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Asthana Vidwan" by Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri. Matham, Kanchipuram, Eminent Mechanical Engineers award from 'Institution of Engineers' Bangalore. "National Integration Award" from the Universal Spiritual Awareness Organisation, New Delhi, Sri Raja Ramanna Award from Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, Govt. of Karnataka and Ganakalashree Award for his contributions to the field of music.
He has brought quintessential reforms in Karnataka Higher Education area during tenure as Vice Chairman Karnataka State Council for Higher Education. As the Vice Chancellor of Tumkur University, Prof.S.C. Sharma has undertaken the task of rebuilding the University and establishing the state-of-the-art infrastructure by approaching several entrepreneurs for help and strived to enhance the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by taking the University to the doors of the needy and the poor in rural and remote areas of the district. His vision of transforming the University into a centre of excellence is evidenced by the MoUs signed by the University with premier institutes like Tata Institute for Social Sciences, Mumbai, National Law School of India University Bangalore, Mangalore University, and Institute for Social & Economic Change, etc. for collaborating research related activities. He led the University in organizing Knowledge Utsav, in collaboration with Jain University, Bangalore, where 44 national conferences were held on a single day. He has initiated Automated Weather Station and Remote Sensing Center established in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at Tumkur University.
Prof. Sharma's genuine concern for the downtrodden and the deprived classes of society is echoed in his special initiatives undertaken by the University for the welfare of students belonging to weaker sections. Programmes like capacity building, skill development, enhancement of communication skills in English, computer literacy, entrepreneurial skills development, personality and leadership development, coaching for competitive exams etc… under the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell, sanctioned by DST to the University. Establishing of Kumaravyasa Chair, Sri Ramanamaharshi Chair, Centre for Pali & Buddhism at Tumkur University, are the examples of his vision and recognition of the service rendered by these legends in their fields. An amalgamation of excellent administrator and a passionate researcher, Prof. S. C. Sharma continues, with perseverance unlimited, to catalyze the transformation of higher education in India to global benchmark where education encompasses quality and humanity.
